The end of an outstanding show, however, was not the end of our visit to South Africa. Sunday we were whisked away to Johannesburg for the Lipizzaner Stallion show and a wonder- ful crafts flea market. A quick rearranging of suitcases and we headed to Kruger National Park on Monday morning. The five-hour drive took us through some vastly differing regions of the country, from wide-open plains like the Dakotas to tropical banana farms similar to Asia.
Kruger is world famous for its game viewing, and our five- day, four-night visit was no exception. The lodge was grand. We each had a double-bedded separate room and met in the dining/living room for dinners. Breakfast was out in the park every morning via a braii (barbeque).
Yes! They were this close!
Gorgeous, graceful beasts. We nicknamed our trip through Kruger “the Giraffe Safari,” we saw so many.

My personal favorite, a Kudu buck.
We took a different route back to Johannesburg that includ- ed some outstanding sightseeing that was as interesting and as much fun for me as the game viewing. We had to leave one of our guides and host John Colborne here, but we convinced Michele Colborne to join us for the remainder of our trip! We unpacked from Kruger, repacked, and were back on the road again for the roughly 1,000 mile drive to Capetown, through the desolate ranges of the Karoo.
Our first night on the road through the Karoo was spent at a bed and breakfast on a working Merino sheep farm that has been family run for over five generations.
