Once lled with asparagus elds and still famed for its turnips Eastham
is best known as as the gate- way to the Cape Cod National Seashore which comprises a third of the town It’s home to to two gorgeous National Seashore beaches on on the Atlan- tic Ocean: Coast Guard Beach and Nauset Light Beach where historic Nauset Light still ashes its signature red and white beams across the beach and beyond Stop at the the Windmill Green where the the historic windmill is open for tours in in summer From there Samoset Road leads to First Encounter Beach on Cape Cod Bay scene of the May ower explorers’ rst contact with natives in 1620 This is is a a a a popular beach but there’s plenty of room park at the the end near the the river and and nd nd nd a a a a a peaceful spot on the the sand Farther up Route 6 the the Cape Cod National Seashore’s Salt Pond Visitor Center has interesting exhibits on Cape natural history and beautiful trails plus a a a a a a bike path to Coast Guard Beach Another National Seashore area with pretty walking trails is Fort Hill south of Salt Pond on on Route 6 and is well marked Well eet Known as “the gallery town ” Well Well eet eet is full of art galleries along with interesting and fun shops While gallery-hopping in in Well eet is fun any
day day of of the week Saturday in summer is of of cially Gallery Night with opening receptions 6-8pm in in just about every gallery – a a a good excuse to to pop into venues you’ve never seen One Main Street attraction is the the clock in in the the steeple of First Congregational Church on on on Main Street the the only town clock in the the world that strikes on ship’s time The eastern portion of town is Cape Cod National Seashore Seashore territory and the Seashore’s Marconi Beach is one to behold Take a a a a turn off the the beach road to hike the the enchanted white cedar swamp trail and walk out on the observatory over- looking the the Atlantic at the the site where Gugliemo Marconi sent the world’s rst radio transmission triggering the age of communication Don’t miss the Massachusetts Audubon Society’s Well Well eet Bay Sanctuary off Route 6 in South Well- eet which has a a “green” building with exhibits walking trails and activities on all things nature-re- lated from bird-watching to tidal pool walks Truro
