What are Tutor Groups?
All learners at Tauhara College are placed in a Tutor Group of around 25 students. This group is made up of students from all year levels. In most situations you will remain in this Tutor Group for your time at college. In most cases your Tutor teacher will be the rst person you talk to when you need support or advice.
The aim of the Tutor Group is to:
• provide a safe and supportive place with a good group of students
• provide a place for junior students to interact positively with senior students
• to provide a place for senior students to develop their leadership, peer support and peer tutoring roles by assisting younger students
• provide a structure for extra-curricula and extension activities such as Canoe / Waka sports and challenges, and Hauora Week / Spirit, Health and Wellbeing Week
• a place where academic mentoring can happen on a regular basis
• to keep you up to date with the day’s events and coming activities via the Daily Notices
What class will I be in?
Your placement in a class follows a discussion with your Deans, yourself and your parents, caregivers and whanaū. This is to ensure a positive placement. You will be with one group of students for most of your learning sessions. When placing you into a class we try to ensure that this is the best possible place for you to be and that there is a good balance of students in the class overall. Class placements are frequently reviewed by the Deans and if a change is required this will be actioned by the Dean.
What happens if I have unique learning needs?
The college has several strategies in place to assist students who need additional help, a di erent approach with their learning or extension. These include:
• a Learning Support Centre that all students are welcome to visit • literacy and numeracy support
• teacher aide assistance
• tutoring by teachers or senior students
• reader – writer assistance where required • second language learning support
• academic mentoring
How will I nd my way around?
Year 9 students have a special day in Term One called Peer Support Day. You will be part of a group with a couple of Year 13 leaders to learn about the college. These leaders will continue to look out for you and support you during your rst year at college. Other students are connected with a peer support buddy who will help them get their bearings on their rst couple of days. The vast majority of our students are very friendly and welcoming to new people and new students very often comment that they are able to make new friends very quickly.
Enjoy the adventure!
