CHAPTER SEVEN
THE LIPS
There are many different types of lip products that a makeup artist can choose from. First thing’s first, always remember to prep the lips at the beginning of your appointment. This means using a hydrating and exfoliating scrub to ensure that the lips are moisturized by the time you have to apply lipstick (just make sure to wipe off the scrub). When choosing a lip product, you should always consider how you want it to go with the overall makeup look. You should also think about your client’s teeth and avoid a warm-toned lipstick if they have discoloured teeth. Finally, think about what they are wearing and what the makeup look is for (daytime, nighttime, etc).
LIP PRODUCTS
LIP LINER
Lip liner is essential for shaping and creating dimension on the lips. Typically, you will want to apply a darker shade of liner with a lighter lipstick. Lip liner also helps the lipstick last longer and can be applied all over the lip as a base before lipstick. Always make sure to sharpen your lip liner before applying it on a client for proper sanitary practices.
LIPSTICK
There are so many different formulas and shades of lipstick: matte,
cream, satin (sheer), shimmer, staining, liquid, and more.
LIPGLOSS
Using a lip gloss is a great way to make the lips look more plump and hydrated. In this case, there are balms and plumpers.
APPLYING LIP PRODUCTS
In order to create a beautiful lip, you will want to line the lips first. Then, you will use a disposable applicator or a brush to apply the lipstick. When choosing the colour that you want to use, think about how that will work with the rest of the overall makeup look. You can also use translucent powder to set a lipstick (just be gentle). Finally, you will want to clean up the mouth by using a concealer (one that matches the foundation around the lip area) to make sure that the lipstick looks perfect.
