  CHAPTER ONE
SANITATION 101: BEST PRACTICES FOR MAKEUP ARTISTS
For makeup artists, understanding sanitization best practices is essential and comes before anything else. There are three main areas that you must always think about: your tools, your workspace, and yourself.
TOOLS & BRUSHES
This includes anything that will touch your client’s face, or that will touch a product that is used on the client’s face. For example, a mixing palette is also considered a tool. All tools must be disinfected between use on each client. For brushes, you can use a solution such as Cinema Secrets. This is a spray that is able to disinfect brushes quickly, however this is not a deep cleaning solution. To do a deep cleaning of your brushes at home (at the end of the day), there are many different products that you can use. Some people like to use dish soap mixed with olive oil, and others like to use a professional makeup brand cleanser (such as Beauty Blender). You must also clean the brush handles with rubbing alcohol. To sanitize your kit make sure to wipe down all products. For powder products (and the kit) you may want to consider purchasing a UV light wand as this will kill more germs.
DISPOSABLE TOOLS
In addition to always keeping your tools clean, there are some disposable tools that you must use. These include: cotton pads, cotton swabs, mascara applicators, lip applicators, and disposable sponges. You should absolutely never use a mascara wand and dip it back into the bottle. You must use a different disposable wand each time. If you do want to use the mascara wand that came with the mascara, you must give the client the mascara at the end of the application. For lipsticks, either take a little bit of the lipstick onto a mixing palette, or use a disposable wand. Again, you cannot use the same disposable wand to touch the lipstick itself more than once. As for eyeliners and lip liners, you must sharpen and disinfect them before each client. Felt brushes should not be used on clients when applying liquid eyeliner. This is because they cannot be disinfected. When it comes to false eyelashes, you can never reuse these on different clients. You must also never blow on false eyelashes when waiting for the glue to get tacky. To avoid potential cross contamination, or reusing a brush without disinfecting it, always keep used brushes in a separate container, and
05 immediately throw your disposable tools into a garbage bag.
