chapter leaders & their stories
“Vincent Manta, St. John’s University
Last January I was approached with an opportunity to revive the YAL chapter at St John’s University. Since becoming a YAL member and Chapter President, my passion for liberty has grown considerably. Aside from that, it has taught me a lot about being a leader and has made me do a lot of studying so I can best represent the values and ideas of liberty. YAL has helped me meet many like-minded people and make a lot of friends. I have met people through YAL I probably would not have met otherwise. After first getting things started on campus, through recruitment drives, outreach with friends, and word of mouth, our chapter growth exploded. We have also hosted events like the Can We Take a Joke? screening. Our fall recruitment drive was our most successful event with dozens of sign ups. We had a lot of buzz around our table and interested students flocked our way. Our chapter is booming!”
“TJ Keegan, SUNY Cortland
In less than a month, our newly forming chapter hosted four successful events. We hosted two debate watch parties and screened a documentary film. This coming year we plan on taking over campus with three free speech balls. Activist trainings in Washington, DC and other cities have armed us with the skills necessary to grow liberty on campus. Our YAL chapter is at the front lines of political debate on campus now, and we have earned great media coverage from our efforts. We look forward to continuing our work!”
“Taylor Anderson, Eastern Washington University
At Eastern Washington University, our chapter’s presence and political reputation have grown. We collaborate with various different groups on campus to find common ground on issues like free speech, criminal justice reform, voter registration, and ending the war on drugs. Our chapter is built on community and friendship and we couldn't have found each other without YAL. We are all grateful for the opportunities, education, and organization that YAL has given us to work with on campus.”
“Victoria Blackmon, University of South Alabama 2017
For YAL members at the University of South Alabama, 2016 has been a year of growth and expansion. Our chapter has turned members into friends, while putting ideas into action. Many of our members have eagerly accepted opportunities to get involved this year. Together we have challenged free speech codes, gained national media attention for standing up for Constitutional rights, participated in campus clean ups, and more. A couple members even were able to attend the 2016 YAL National Convention and explore Washington, DC! Our chapter had an outstanding year promoting freedom and there's more planned for the future thanks to the commitment of our dedicated young leaders.”
“Tamara Stainton, St. Petersburg College
At St. Petersburg College-Gibbs Campus we had a great time promoting liberty this year! We participated in several national activism events and even put on our own "liberty fair" showcasing many liberty-minded ideas such as free speech, the right to self-defense, and ending the war on drugs. Since the start of our chapter, we have continued to grow on campus. We look forward to continuing representing YAL on campus and bringing others into the movement for years to come.”
