 CHAPTER 5: NUTRITION/LIFESTYLE
There is no doubt every person reading this book can agree that being sick or injured changes your life, even if it’s just for a short period of time. You never truly realize how grateful you are for your health, until you no longer have it. Hippocrates said “A wise man should consider that health is the greatest of human blessings." I say, amen to that!
Hopefully now that you’ve read my tips on improving mental and physical strength, you are ready to learn how to truly reap the benefits of those newly sharpened tools. Many athletes do not pay enough attention to what they are putting in their bodies, but it makes a huge difference. Would you put cheap gas into a race car? Proper nutrition, and healthy lifestyle choices will without a doubt get you to that next level.
To say nutrition is an obsession of mine is probably an understatement. I eat, sleep, and breathe it everyday, and I’m constantly learning as the world around us evolves.
I wish you could see the look on my teammates faces when I opened up my carry-on luggage bag for road trips. It was filled to the brim, (you’re welcome TSA agents..ha) with healthy, clean snacks. This was vital, especially coming through the minor league system, because the pre and post game meals weren’t always the healthiest. (I have heard they’ve improved since my time however.) The big league spreads were solid, but I take snacking to a whole other level. Here’s what you could find in my carry on bag; bison jerky, protein bars & bites (from ONNIT), freeze dried fruits, grain-free granola, oatmeal, travel size nut butters, himalayan pink salt, coconut oil, raw honey, assorted nuts, my supplements, protein and greens powders. See what I mean by
obsessed? Yes, my buddies made fun of me, but they also always hit me up for my snacks and food tips.
