GOAL SETTING
ACHIEVABLE- Make your goal ones you can actually achieve. You may dream of being a big leaguer when you're 8, but set goals that are in line with the next step in your career, don’t reach too high too soon. For example: I have found a coach to work with and I will make sacrifices to be sure I have the time to practice and become a better hitter, that could help me make varsity.
RELEVANT- Be sure it makes sense to set this kind of goal now. For example: My defense has always been good, but I need to be a more complete hitter to make the team. It is relevant because if you're not a well rounded player, you may not get the opportunity to show your talents.
TIME-BOUND- Have a deadline to reach your goal and make sure it is realistic. For example: The season is 4 months away. I have more than enough time to work on my swing and achieve the goal of making the team.
**Your ORIGINAL goal was to become a better hitter and make varsity next year**. After working through each of the SMART goal exercises, your new goal should look something like this.
DURING THE OFFSEASON, I WILL BECOME A BETTER HITTER, AND THEREFORE A MORE WELL ROUNDED PLAYER. I’LL WORK WITH A COACH I TRUST HITTING 5 DAYS A WEEK IN ORDER TO DEVELOP A GOOD LINE DRIVE APPROACH AND MAKE SURE EVERY SWING I TAKE HAS A PURPOSE. BY DOING THIS, I WILL BECOME A MORE CONSISTENT HITTER, WITH MORE LINE DRIVES AND LONG FLY BALLS. COMBINED WITH MY ALREADY GOOD DEFENSE, I WILL BE ABLE TO MAKE THE VARSITY TEAM.
YOU ARE NOW EQUIPPED WITH THE TOOLS FOR PROPER AND S.M.A.R.T GOAL SETTING. IT’S UP TO YOU TO MAINTAIN FOCUS AND MOTIVATION TO ACHIEVE THEM. CHECK ONE S.M.A.R.T GOAL BOX, THEN MOVE ONTO THE NEXT, AND ALWAYS STRIVE TO UNLOCK YOUR TRUE POTENTIAL.
