HOW OFTEN?
Some have misunderstood 1 Corinthian 11:26, which says: "For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes." They have interpreted it to say "take it as often as you please." But this verse does not say that.
It says "whenever" we observe the Lord's Supper we "proclaim the Lord's death until he comes." Jesus commanded, "Do this whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me" (verse 25). How often should that be?
Christ is our Passover sacrifice for us. He was sacrificed on the exact day of the year that the Passover lambs always had been slain. As the Old Testament Passover commemorated Israel's deliverance from Egypt, a symbol of sin, so the Passover of the New Testament commemorates Jesus Christ's death and our deliverance from sin.
Therefore, in remembrance of the Lord's death, the Passover or "Lord's Supper" is to be taken annually on the anniversary of the great event it commemorates. Jesus instituted this New Testament ordinance on the eve of his death. It was the 14th day of the first month of the Hebrew calendar.
