Aidlink Summary Annual Report 2023
Spotlight – Water and Sanitation Improvement Project, Uganda
PARTNER Caritas Maddo FUNDING ElectricAid
In Partnership with Caritas MADDO, Aidlink have been working to increase access to cleaner safer water for almost 15,000 people in Masaka District. Through the protection of shallow wells in over 30 villages and provision of water tanks in 9 primary schools.
Impact: Funding from ElectricAid facilitated the repair and upgrade of an existing borehole in Butaano village, with the installation of a submersible pump, overhead tank and pipe and tap system supplying clean safe water to 645 pupils at St. Paul Buuna primary school, the Zzine health center and local communities.
“Before the borehole water project, our children had to travel far to collect water, but now we are able to get water quickly and it gives us teachers more time to spend with the children. We are also using the water collected for irrigation purposes, planting some crops which we use for pupils’ lunches
and also share with the community. This has created a good relationship between the school and local community.” Teacher from St Paul Primary school
“Life has changed now that I can go the short distance to the tap to collect water. My children can now take water to school and at home, our livestock are better and we can grow a kitchen garden. Having water nearby has freed up so much of my time and I am now able to do more farm work and attend to my patients.”

WASH: The Vehicle for Better Education project has delivered a safer school environment for nearly 4,000 students, their teachers and families from 7 Universal Primary Schools Kyankwanzi district, Uganda. Using a twin track approach the project not only improved school infrastructure but also supported school management, teachers and communities with training on Water Sanitation and Hygiene, sexual reproductive Health and the operation, maintenance and sustainability of facilities.
Impact: Kalaala Esther is a primary six pupil at Ntunda Primary school located in Ntunda Town council Kyankwanzi district. She is 11 years old and has been at this school for the last five years.
“The fact is water is a determinant of everything, without water at school; no porridge and food. Water is everything. We have been getting a lot of inconveniences resulting from limited access to water, we could go to borehole at 7.30am and come back at 10am. Or in the evening we could go at 3pm and come back at 6pm. We have been missing a lot. Also we are were really fed up with queuing to use the former latrine which was shared by all of us, the teachers, boys and girls. Normally the teachers want us to use the latrines during break times and we could all find ourselves at the latrine the same time. Now, the girls have a separate latrine which is private. Therefore, we thank God for the breakthrough; No more inconvenience with water tank and latrines we are profoundly happy.”
