Country Profile Kenya
In these communities it is the responsibility of girls to fetch water. In times of drought, the distances girls walk for water can reach up to 18km. Throughout the Covid-19 crisis, this travel, coupled with school closures has placed girls at a much higher risk of Gender-based Violence (GBV) and sexual assault. 152,000 Kenyan teenage girls became pregnant over a three-month period during lockdown. This represents a 40% increase on the country's average.
