Swist is his consistent anti-war stance. It seems a pity not to highlight this
in what promises to be a definitive version for children in the 21st century. That failure may relate to the overall comic intention of the illustrator as discussed earlier. Though Jenkins re-tells Swist’s story with care, fidelity and fine writing, and though Riddell illustrates it superbly, wittily, and generously, and with a great variety of styles, the essence of Swist’s satire eludes them.
