He was an active member and supporter of the Birmingham Tamil School, and enjoyed playing the miruthangam at school concerts, the Hindu temple and at the Birmingham Tamil carol service. To him God was everywhere and would be very much at home in the Hindu temple as well as the Christian church.
While we were in Croatia for Mathavan’s wedding we visited Medjugorje, a famous Catholic church. Aruna followed and participated in the service with such devotion that the priest almost offered him the holy communion.
He visited Jaffna often and there he had a beautiful house built. Although I’ve not been fortunate to visit him there, I have been given a FaceTime tour of the house and the impressive garden. He loved gardening. Many a phone call to me was more of a “Gardeners’ Question Time”, and the specialised questions were on fuchsias, care of pot plants and pruning bushes. But I was no expert and it was pooled knowledge.
He had fought a good fight, kept the faith and has finished the race. Ready or not all things come to an end.
No more surprises. No more minutes or days. And no more to-do-lists. But your acts of integrity, compassion and sacrifice have enriched, empowered and encouraged others to emulate your example.
