Mr Arunasalam was an ever-smiling person with everyone and above all a compassionate soul. I got acquainted with him from 1965/1966 when he was a young lawyer and the president of the youth forum of the Federal Party.
We were colleagues both in the profession and in politics. Since he was senior to me in both fields I considered him to be my mentor. He was always genuine to his party and the leadership in politics, as well as to his clients in his profession.
Since Thanthai Chelva admired his sincerity and forthrightness, he made him the president of the Youth Forum during the crucial period when the Dudley-Chelva pact was being negotiated.
When Tamil Congress and the Federal Party formed the TULF, he was one of the founding members of the TULF. He had close relationship with Mr Amirthalingam and Mr Sivasithamparam and had been admired and trusted
by them both. Though he was sincere to the leadership, he never hesitated to put across his views when those differed from theirs. But he did that confidentially as a gentleman and never bent on scoring points among the fellow members.
If not for his magnanimity to foster the unity of the party he could have become the member of the parliament for Chavakachcheri in 1977. In recent years, he was very active and the main force behind the formation of the UK branch of
the TNA and continued to be its advisor and patron.Though he had been a lawyer and a politician, he will be remembered as a gentleman of high integrity.
I convey my condolences personally and on behalf of TNA (UK) to his family members.
R. D. Ratnasingham, President, TNA (UK)
