As I sit here at my computer in the early mornings, as I do when I don’t need the early morning cool for heavy gardening work, I am able to reflect uninterrupted on life. We have been in lockdown, with greater or lesser logic and wisdom in guidance, for weeks. So many people have suffered terribly with this, whether through illness, bereavement, isolation, privation or financial hardship and even businesses have been lost. However, here, life proceeds more or less as normal (if there is such a thing). We are very lucky, with a large premises, big gardens, vegetable and fruit-growing duties and too much to do, whether gardening, maintenance, tidying or creating. Each day seems as if there’s been a work out in the gym, but nothing like as tedious! No time for hobbies in the summer! I really feel for those who have been isolated in much different situations.
Then there’s the veterinary work. The staff has been furloughed, which means more ‘peace’ but also massively more administrative work (far from my strong suit), alongside the veterinary duties. Because of my ‘oath’, I have felt the need to see animals in need and have felt unable to separate them from the family for such purposes. Right from college days, so long ago, I have not been able to cope with such a setup. We have therefore devised a system whereby only one client comes on the premises at a time and appointments are much more widely spaced. This means that the waiting list has lengthened but so be it.
