DFCS Ward Macauley Scholarship Awards
Five Outstanding Recipients for 2018
By Al Major, DFCS Scholarship Committee Chairman
The DFC Society has had an active scholarship program for many years. Through the generosity of our members in general and certain organizations in particular we are able to award several scholarships annually to outstanding young students. These students are all descendants of DFC Society active members.
Many people have contributed to the Scholarship Fund since its inception. In the last couple of years we have received large contributions from The RGT Charitable Remainder Trust through the efforts of Executive Vice President Greg Mac Neil. To them, and all of you, we are very grateful.
The scholarships are named in honor of WWII DFC recipient Ward
Macauley, since the initial funding for establishing the program was donated by his widow, Lydia Macauley.
The Scholarship Committee is comprised of four Society Directors, with President Chuck Sweeney providing oversight. The current Committee members are Messrs. Allen Nuss, Lewis Watt, James Wilhite, and Al Major. We are backed by Office Manager Mary Ellen Park.
Each spring the students send their applications to Mary Ellen at the National Office by the end of May. She sorts through them, ensuring that each applicant has submitted the required documentation. She then sends them to the Committee for consideration. The Committee meets telephonically and “rates and ranks” the applicants. This is a very difficult process as all applicants are truly outstanding young men and women.
The Society was able to award five $1000 scholarships this past June for the current 2018-2019 academic year. To those students who were not selected this year, we sincerely hope you will consider applying again next year.
This year’s winners of the Ward Macauley DFC Society scholarships are:
1. Emily Beck: Granddaughter of Charles McClarren, USAF
2. Delaney Brown: Granddaughter of Harvey Crouch, Jr., USMC
3. Luke Demers: Son of Paul R. Demers, USMC
4. Kendall Langum: Daughter of Scott Edward Langum, USCG
5. Paige Langum: Daughter of Scott Edward Langum, USCG
Congratulations, students!
Emily Beck
I am proud to be a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross Society Scholarship and to be able to look up to my grandfather who served in the Air Force. This summer I have an internship as a branding design assistant in Rhode Island, am working as an assistant to a wedding photographer, and
also continue to work with horses which I've done for fourteen years. In the fall, I will be a senior at Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston where I'm studying Industrial Design with a minor in Sustainability. While at school, I work in Student Activities to find volunteering opportunities for the student body and I’m also a member of the Industrial Design Society of America. Once I graduate, I hope to travel for a period of time and then
continue my studies with a Master’s Degree.
