VF-17 Jolly Rogers – WWII Premier Corsair Fighter Squadron
VF-17 Jolly Rogers was the most successful Corsair fighter squadron of WWII, achieving 152 air-to-air victories with 11 members making Ace. Land based in the Solomon Islands as the Navy found the Corsair lacking for carrier operations, the squadron was later issued F6F-5 Hellcats and moved aboard the USS Hornet for another combat tour, where the Jolly Rogers excelled again with 161 victories and 12 Aces. VF-17’s total of 313 victories was the most achieved by any Squadron in the Navy during the war.
