Unless my memory betrays me
I am in an open relationship with my memory.
The only condition we have set – and we keep it
with loyalty – is not to know what the other is doing. Although we live in the same house, we have different hours and we don’t meet often.
Sometimes we eat together.
Every now and then we talk, but always vaguely.
We never refer to facts.
Since we grew up together we know very well
in subtle, almost invisible, gestures to read
one another, but we are kind enough to pretend that
we don’t understand, to the extent that
we actually don’t understand.
To avoid embarrassing each other
we ask nothing.
We don’t expect anything
We don’t fight.
I regret to say, but sometimes I get the feeling
that we take each other’s existence for granted.
