 Today, this is still true I believe. Even though we do not see Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, etc., on the nightly news, we are never far from one degree of separation from those that serve or have served. There are movies and television shows about the wars of today and what it might be like; we watch them in support. I lived in New York just blocks from Chelsea Piers on 9/11. The day this world was traumatized irrevocably and we all went to war with terror. That’s why I say, the effects touch all of us. None of us however in any way like those who have risked life and limb in service to our country and live with it. These are the brave, fearless, honorable, survivors I believe Courtenay is writing this book for.
Because of my own experience with childhood abuses, I suffer from PTSD. I didn’t know or understand it or even what was happening to me until I was well into my 30’s. I now know my own personal symptoms when I have been triggered, but for most of my life, I was just unable to fathom “what was wrong with me.” The level of shame and lack of confidence was unbearable. It kept me from fulfilling my dreams of a career in acting that I dreamed of, and the children I wanted to have. Luckily I found the help I needed
