“Heaven goes by favor. If it went by merit, you would stay out and your dog would go in.” - Mark Twain
Courtenay: In some ways similar to Toby, I have a need to rely on someone else to help keep me on track and my spouse is also my caregiver. I can really get lit, anger wise, when someone says, for instance, that they will be there for me but then ends up disappointing me by not showing up at all. I would prefer that they not make the promise to begin with.
Thankfully, my spouse is very reliable and both he and the Alexa application keep me on track when it comes to my medications. I also utilize a notebook to keep track of appointments and I write to-do's and appointments on our wall calendar.
While on my way to Afghanistan, I had to stay in a hotel for a short period of time and was expected to treat all of my uniforms with Permethrin (insect repellant). I had no way to quickly dry the uniforms and the hotel had no facilities, so I left them hanging up in the shower with the fan running. They were still a little damp when I had to pack them, but there was no other choice, I had to get where I was going.
I was traveling with another Sailor...kind of a buddy system thing which I initially thought was a great idea. He stated he was going to get something to eat and would be right back but a half hour later he still hadn’t returned to our departure gate.
As time until our flight got shorter and shorter, so did my temper, and I could feel my ears and face burning as our flight was boarding. When he finally showed up, when they were announcing the final boarding call, I was fully steamed and applied a few choice off-color (a.k.a. full-blooded Sailor) words from myself to that Petty Officer that were very much deserved.
It wasn't like we were on vacation or anything and he didn’t come back with any feasible explanation, apology or excuse for his absence...which only served to piss me off even more. Especially since this was a junior Petty Officer.
What really lit my grits is this guy ended up working for me.
