“What should young people do with their lives today? Many things, obviously. But the most daring thing is to create stable communities in which the terrible disease of loneliness can be cured.” - Kurt Vonnegut
Courtenay: As John Donne said, “No man is an island”...no one on this planet...and, I would hope that every single serviceman and woman in this world has someone else watching their six (watching their back). When we return from service we come back to a world focused more on individualistic attitudes and more solitary existences than the close and connected, team focused atmosphere we served in.
We departed the ‘hug’ of our comrades in arms, expecting the same feeling on our return and simply not finding it unless we were lucky enough to remain in the service upon our return, remain with at least some of the same people we deployed with, or connect with like brothers and sisters through Veterans groups, group therapy, motorcycle clubs, and the numerous other outlets available for this very purpose.
The most important thing is not giving up...and finding the right path to recovery for each person...and that it is never the same for all Veteran’s. I very strongly believe that innate personality plays a strong role in this as well...as you cannot get someone who is introverted go out to a bar or dancing when that’s the last thing they’s ever want to do...just as you probably aren’t going to have an extrovert who likes spending time reading in a library by themselves.
You just have to find your way off of your own personal ‘island’.
