to be able to do something like this and to really make a difference for others. After we returned from deployment, I do not recall anyone talking about issues, current or potential, with PTSD, post-deployment.
The first time I had any idea I was dealing with PTSD was when I started getting triggered while attending a Legal Officer course shortly after my return from Afghanistan. I knew I was dealing with anxiety but I didn't understand why. That anxiety evolved and slowly worsened while I was working at my civilian federal job.
Nine months after my return from Kandahar, I decided to go back on Active Duty as I thought that returning to my 'comfort zone' would ease my anxiety. It helped for a while, until changes in the departmental leadership caused elevation in my stress levels, plus my extra assignment standing watch became a trigger that made the PTSD worse. It wasn't too long after that when I attended a PTSD treatment program, after which I was sent to Portsmouth, VA for further care and was put on medical hold.
