because they said he was doing a lot of the IEDs and a lot of the Mortars that he was dropping on our camps and stuff. So, they showed us his cache, and we took over his cache and blew it up. It was kind of hard to hear a family tell us thank you for killing their son.
We went on a lot of missions. We were going downtown through Baghdad and were going underneath a pedestrian bridge and one of the insurgents actually put an IED pointing down towards the road and one of the guys Humvee’s got hit and the guy who was in the track commander hatch ended up dying because he got stuck on the strap that was supposed to keep us safe. They couldn't pull him out so he ended up burning to death. He didn't know because he got knocked out by the blast but one of the other soldiers was trying to pull him out but he couldn't...and that soldier got second and third degree burns on his arms and his face from trying to pull the unconscious soldier free. The other soldiers had to come and stop him from continuing to try to pull him free because the soldier in the hatch was already dead and there was nothing anyone could do for him. That was one of our guys.
We helped rebuild bridges that were blown up in air raids, so that we could make sure our people could get across safely. It would be either a metal bridge that we put together or a wood and concrete bridge that we put together. We also set up Hesco Barriers in our camp just outside of Bagdad City, in a broken-down amusement park. We put together and placed barriers at the front gate. We also covered the appropriate areas with concertina wire and chain link fence...which basically surrounded the entire camp. The barriers were strategically placed in order to maintain the best possible safety for the inhabitants. We also had to go to the Green Zone and fix all of their barriers after attacks. It was called a green zone because higher ranking
