Once they returned home and realized that their levels of stress and anxiety weren’t lessening, and when they figured out how comfortable they were in higher stress situations, they would often start participating in higher-risk activities because that was the only time they could feel normal or comfortable.
When you get used to serving in an environment like that, working under a high level of stress and uncertainty, and can become so comfortable under the elevated level of stress that you may do things to bring yourself back into your comfort zone. It can get to the point however, when your level of stress is so high that nothing helps bring it down...and that is when you should recognize your need to ask for help. This could include going on another deployment, speeding, getting in bar fights, bungee jumping, sky diving, basically taking chances you never even considered before. Much like I did, you may have a hard time readjusting to home, family and relationships...and it can be a constant and ongoing struggle to establish and maintain some sense of normalcy.
