Courtenay: Next I'd like you to meet Charlie and his Veteran Stacy. During her service she was able to capture the essence of service in combat through the lens of her camera. Her photographs helped to tell the unfiltered story of the military service in war zones, thereby communicating a clear message that wouldn't be possible otherwise.
I recall my own time in Kandahar. On one evening one of the rockets, the second of three that evening, hit us very close by...going through the roof of the dining facility not 500 feet away from where I stood, just outside my bunker. I saw and felt the pressure of the rocket going overhead, saw the sparks and flames, smelled electricity in the air, heard the metal roof being ripped apart, and felt the impact under my feet.
All I could do was stand there and wonder if we would be next. I truly wondered if I would still make it home in one piece. It was one of three Taliban-fired rockets that hit the base that night but that rocket was the only one that caused injuries. Along with that electrical smell and the sound of sirens came the knowledge that I would be up all night working on Casualty Reporting for those injured.
The air assets assigned to the Kandahar Airfield made the base more of a target by those who 'lived' in the surrounding country. This is what brought on the increase in attacks on our base, via rocket/missile and ground attacks. In this instance, all we could do in the bunkers was wait
