Through the iRest Program, people suffering from PTS/PTSD, depression, anxiety, chronic pain, and/or insomnia are able to break free of the ways they have been held hostage by their thoughts, emotions, and memories. They begin to regain perspective. Anxiety, fear, depression, and feelings of helplessness, and being out of control begin to lessen or entirely resolve. PTS/PTSD symptoms diminish. They regain their ability to navigate their life, work, and relationships in more authentic and responsive ways. And they feel a sense of joy, well-being, and peace return to their lives.
Through engaging iRest Meditation, negative self-talk diminishes. Creativity and insight come alive. Your brain and body turn on reparative and restorative processes that boost your immune system, increase your overall sense of well-being and joy, reduce stress-related symptoms of PTS/PTSD, and support you to enjoy restful sleep at night.
Military and iRest
In 2004, the U.S. military approached me with a request to conduct research on iRest with Active Duty and Veterans who were experiencing PTSD. The research was so successful that iRest immediately became a permanent program offered by the Walter Reed Deployment Health Clinical Center, providing every wounded warrior the opportunity to take part in a three-week healing regimen of what became known as ‘Integrative Restoration’ or ‘iRest Meditation’.
When I first started the research at Walter Reed, I called the program, Yoga Nidra. But I was quickly informed by the military that soldiers in the program couldn’t relate to the word, Yoga Nidra. With this realization, I subsequently changed the name of my program to Integrative Restoration, or iRest for short. ‘Integrative’ because the program teaches us how to self-regulate our emotions, thoughts, and body sensations.
