In over three decades of dealing with the Beast, not once, not ever, not a single solitary occasion has one of these mental health practitioners been there to help me through my night terrors. Yes, after the fact, they are there to talk about the episodes or prescribe more pharmaceuticals, but never ever have they been there in the moment. Since Thai came into my life the night terrors are no longer a nightly occurrence and she rapidly responds in the middle of the night, when there is nary a mental health pro to be seen or heard from. Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), like many other autoimmune disorders, has a way of showing up unannounced and overstaying its welcome. It has been building for a few days and today the damn pain genie got out of the bottle. For those who do not know what these things are like may I will try and put it in terms that you can relate to. With an RA flare, pick a pair of extremities or major joints (hands, feet, knees, hips, etc.) and dip in gasoline. Light on fire. Keep adding fuel to keep the burn going. The pain is debilitating and causes both chronic fatigue from fighting and a horrible condition called "Painsomnia" (nagging, burning pain that makes it impossible to get comfortable and sleep). Then, just to make it so much better, the joints swell as the bodies self-defense, causing more pain. Finally, the irritability, frustration and short-fused temper takes over. Sleep is always tough.
I struggle horribly with anger management issues. My initial trauma related injuries have been overshadowed by institutional betrayal. As a result of the actions that saw me awarded our countries second highest award for bravery, I developed and was diagnosed with PTSD that went untreated for years. Anything would have helped. I pre-date Critical Incident Stress debriefing.
