came off. I couldn’t return to my unit for obvious reasons so I simply had to wait until the bandages came off and we could determine whether my eyesight was seriously damaged . The doctor didn’t think there would be any serious problems but admitted he didn’t know for sure—we had to guard against infection and the possibility that some of the debris was still in my eyes. I spent several days with the bandages covering my eyes—finally, we took the bandages off and as I tried to open my eyes, the light felt like acid had been thrown in my face——they immediately teared up —the Dr. said to keep trying—gradually, after many tries I was able to open my eyes and keep them open—I could see! I had to wear sunglasses during the daylight hours and it took a couple more weeks—but the exams went well—there didn’t appear to be any complications or long term effects and I was back with my platoon picking up where I left off.
