Gold – Mississauga Cement Plant
Maximizing Alternative Fuels and RONA with Solvents
Team members: Iaroslav Jemtchoujnikov, Paul Campbell, Bob Voce, Raul Morales, David Bangma, Paul Ukrainetz, Mazhar Hayat, Steve Pratt and Chafik Bentchicou
The Mississauga Cement Plant co-processes waste solvents and oils in its kiln in order to reduce coal consumption and improve variable costs. While this has been done at the plant for several decades, consumption volume in the last several years has been limited by the plant’s processes and remained significantly below permitted limits. Recognizing the need to continue to maximize our assets and improve our environmental performance, in late 2018 and throughout 2019, the production and commercial teams worked closely together to significantly improve the volume of solvents the plant can consume and to secure additional volume in the market at
The process optimization accomplished by the plant’s production team was critical to this innovation enabling the consumption of more solvents. This included sourcing and installing new equipment, as well as optimizing plant chemistry and conditions. The commercial team also worked closely with
production to start taking in higher-water- content solvents. This has significantly improved our gate fees with minimal impact to plant processes. Close collaboration between our production and commercial teams has also improved our agility in the waste market, critical for securing additional volume and maximize our assets.
a higher gate fee. This project has delivered significant revenues, through gate fees and coal offsets in 2019.
“I’d like to congratulate the winners for continuing to create value and keeping our employees safe.”
