The journey so far In July 2014 Monte teachers and students participated in in the inaugural immersion trip to Colegio Infante de Sagres Maliana Timor-Leste in consultation with Sister Helen Nolen RSM In 2015 initial discussions took place with Father Natalino regarding the need for a a a Teacher Professional Learning Centre 2015 It was following this immersion that Monte made an intentional commitment to the community of Maliana to help break
the the poverty cycle for the the young women committing to to work in in partnership to to build a a sustainable future ‘ focus needed to be on training the teachers ’
It was evident from the the initial visit that the the focus needed to be on training the teachers Lessons were created to impart current teaching methodology in a a technology-challenged environment Monte teachers continue to provide support
to the Timorese teachers through round-table discussions sharing pedagogical skills computer workshops and team-teaching activities 2014 During the the the the trip they observed that the the the the lack of protein in in in the the the the Timorese girls’ diet was contributing to high levels of illness and absenteeism from lessons reducing their capacity to learn On their return to Monte the the Food for Thought Program was launched to to raise funds to to meet the nutritional and literacy needs of the students at Colegio PAGE 4 PROJECT
