Poetry Award for lifetime achievement 2025

Kacper Bartczak is the winner of this year’s Sile- sius Poetry Award for lifetime achievement. The award ceremony will take place in October, during
a joint gala of the Silesius and Angelus Central European Literature Award.
KACPER BARTCZAK
(ur. 1972) –(born 1972)
is a poet, translator, es-
sayist, and literary critic.
He made his debut with
the Strefa błędów uro-
jonych volume (2000).
He also published: Domy
mediowe (2003), Życie świetnych ludzi (2009), Prze- nicacy (2013), Wiersze organiczne (2015), Pokarm suweren (2017), Naworadiowa (2019), Widoki wymazy (2021) and Czas kompost (2023). He was twice nominated for the Silesius Poetry Award (2016 and 2024) and the Gdynia Literary Prize (2016). He is the author of two books of essays: Świat nie scalony (2009), for which he received the Literatury na Świecie Award in the category of „Nowe głosy w komparatystyce” and Materia i autokreacja. Do- ciekania w poetyce wielościowej (2019). He transla- ted the poetry of John Ashbery, Peter Gizzi, and Rae Armantrout. Together with Andrzej Sosnowski, they translated Peter Gizzi’s Imitacja życia i inne wiersze (2013). In 2018, his translation of Rae Armantrout’s Ciemna materia was published.
Kacper Bartczak is a professor at the University of Łódź, where he heads the Department of North American Literature and Culture. He researches American poetry from Romanticism to the present day, taking historical, theoretical, and comparative contexts into account. In the latter aspect, he com- pares the works of American authors (including Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, Wallace Stevens, John Ashbery, Frank O’Hara, Rae Armantrout, and Peter Gizzi) with Polish poetry (including Jarosław Marek Rymkiewicz, Czesław Miłosz, and Zbigniew Herbert). He also studies contemporary American prose, including the works of Don DeLillo and Cor- mac McCarthy.
In previous years, the winners of the Silesius Poetry Award for lifetime achievement were: Tadeusz Ró- żewicz, Stanisław Barańczak, Piotr Sommer, Urszula Kozioł, Marcin Świetlicki, Krystyna Miłobędzka, Darek Foks, Jacek Podsiadło, Julian Kornhauser, Andrzej Sosnowski, Bohdan Zadura, Ewa Lipska, Eugeniusz Tkaczyszyn-Dycki, Ryszard Krynicki, Marcin Sendecki, Joanna Mueller, and Marzanna Bogumiła Kielar.
