   MONTHLY OPINION Instinct
Spiders! Scary!! Well maybe not, but there are some folks who are truly terrified of them. That kind of fear of spiders is called Arachnophobia. I’m sure you’ve heard of it. They are everywhere in the summer, just doing their thing, living their best life.
We have been having such
beautiful weather so my
husband, Ken, and I have
been having our morning
coffee outside. It’s wonderful
to hear the birds sing, feel the
refreshing breeze, and hear the water flow from fountain.
Right beside me, I notice something sort of shimmering. I look down, and in the bush beside me I see a shiny, intricate spiderweb gleaming against the morning sun’s rays.
I am interested in how perfect it seems. How in the world do those little spiders figure out how to weave these delicate and perfectly round structures. Look at how there are support lines spun from the center of the web to the outside of the circle. They are spaced as supporting “beams” for the whole structure. These spiders are , by virtue of instinct, Web Engineers!! The web is made of silk. The spider produces the silk from glands located in their abdomen. This is astounding to me!
They produce the material they need from inside of themselves and they use it, instinctively, to fashion their homes, create their environment, and to prepare a place for their sustenance. And, when it’s complete, it shimmers in the sun like gold and silver. It’s beautiful and masterful! I’m so impressed.
Wow! The things I can learn from a spider! Greer Garson.
