Local Edmonton Artist Uses Pandemic Lockdown to Record a New Single With Global Collaborators
When the pandemic hit, Danielle Dayton was on tour with plans to attend the JUNOS in Saskatoon. She was in Saskatchewan when shutdown started getting announced and she made the decisions to cut the tour short and return to Edmonton.
Like many other musicians, she was left wonder- ing “What am I going to do now?”
Not one to sit and wait for opportunities, Dayton decided to start writing new music but with the pan- demic she knew her opportunities to record any new music, likely wouldn’t be there as many recording studios had also closed.
Dayton decided to try recording herself. She set up a small studio in her home, including a vocal booth in her basement “with 2x4s, acoustic insula- tion, landscaping fabric and an excessive amount of staples” and began working. Through trial and error, she was able to record some of her new ideas, share them with some industry friends to get feedback and continued to develop her studio skills. By fall she was ready to release her fully self-produced song, a new holiday single entitled “Sleigh Bells”. The track was received well by radio and even reached #5 on the Canadian Online Radio Christmas Chart.
to do more with her next recording, but to do this she would need the help of other musicians to record the instruments she could not do herself. Not able to invite musicians over to her small home studio, she started looking into other options.
She discovered that the website Fiverr had a sec- tion featuring freelance musicians who could record remotely.
Connecting virtually with pianist Luca Longoni (Italy) (instagram @lucalongoni), drummer Elena Costa (UK) (instagram @elencostadrums), award winning cellist Akito Goto (UK)(instagram @gotiaki- to), and guitarist Kyle Mcallister (Nashville)(insta- gram @kylemacallistermusic), the international art- ists helped bring her song to life. Dayton was also able to recruit local bassist Ryan Holmes and award winning engineer Brad Smith from Velveteen Audio to help mix and master the track remotely.
The result of this international collaboration was “Home To You” which Danielle Dayton released on March 15.
“Home to You” contemplates some of the lowest moments Danielle has felt during this pandemic, in order to build herself back up and start to heal, like so many of us. “I’m trying my absolute hardest to silence the part of my mind that has told me I am not doing enough. There is no correct way to feel about all of this, and I am trying to go easier on myself.”
Danielle is available for interviews and would love to see some reviews or features. If you do a piece on Danielle Dayton please forward us any links, so we can share them on our social media.
