TALLAHASSEE — The weather is heating up and for many Floridians this means it’s time to cool off in the pool. While a day of playing in the pool can be fun, in- juries and illnesses due to water-related activities in- crease during this time of year.
“Simple precautions can keep friends and family stay safe in and around pools, beaches, and lakes,” said State Surgeon General and Secretary of Health Dr. John Armstrong. “By being watchful together, we can keep the fun in water ac- tivities for everyone.”
Pool safety is everyone’s responsibility. Water Proof Florida encourages layers of protection that include su- pervision, barriers and emergency preparedness.
Here are a few tips to en- sure the safety of you and your loved ones this pool season:
• Do not swim when you have diarrhea and make sure you take bathroom breaks every 60 minutes.
• Shower with soap before you start swimming and take rinse showers every time you get back into the water.
• Wash your hands after visiting the bathroom or changing diapers.
• Don’t swallow the water you swim in. Parents should take children on bathroom breaks every 60 minutes and check diapers every 30–60 minutes.
Particularly for children with disabilities, adult super- vision is imperative. Accord- ing to the National Autism Association, from 2009— 2011 accidental drowning ac- counted for 91 percent of the total U. S. deaths reported in children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder ages 14 and younger.
Safe Kids Worldwide, a global organization dedi-
cated to preventing injuries in children, offers a video that addresses water safety for children with special needs.

Allergies can literally pre- vent you from enjoying all aspects of life, if not man- aged properly. Here are four ways you can manage your allergies at home.
1. Apple Cider Vinegar
- Offer allergy relief with much success because the acidity helps to reduce mu- cous production, therefore keeping your lymphatic sys- tem clear.
Mix a teaspoon of unfil- tered apple cider vinegar in a glass of water and drink three times a day.
2. Neti Pot and Saline Rinse - Both of these solu- tions work off the theory that you can help relieve your al- lergens by using saline solu- tion to flush out the sinus passageways, keeping them clear from irritation.
Use a pre-made saline rinse or make your own by dissolving 1 teaspoon of Hi- malayan or sea salt in a quart of boiled distilled water. Cool completely and put in the Neti Pot. Pour through one nostril and let it drain out the other.
3. Nettle Leaf - A natural antihistamine, nettle leave is great at blocking the body’s histamine production. This plant can be easily grown, but the easiest and most ef- fective methods are said to be delivered via capsule form. Used in conjunction with herbal teas mixed with peppermint are deemed to offer the maximum relief.
4. Probiotics - An imbal- ance of the immune system brought on by several factors is how allergies begin to take a toll on your health. Many researchers believe that the introduction of “good” bacte- ria into the body effectively helps reduce the onset of al- lergy attacks.
