Karen Peoples said she was elated to hear that Councilman Frank Red- dick was successful in get- ting authorities to put up a crosswalk along East Hills- borough Avenue where high school students have been struck and killed attempting to cross the street.
“I wish they would have done it sooner, and I think after the first child was hit, something should have been done then.
“I understand how politics work, and it was up to the Florida Department of Trans- portation to assess the situa- tion and get it done.”
Ms. Peoples said she’s tried volunteering her time to ride along with students on school buses. She thinks there is even a more urgent need for crosswalks along Hillsborough Avenue.
“I think it’s something that needs to be reviewed along Hillsborough all the way to the Town ‘N Country area.
“As far as volunteering to ride on the school buses is concerned, I think parents need to understand the dan- gers their children face and the fact the bus drivers get lit- tle or no support.”
Ms. Peoples said there are

too many lives at stake to take something like this lightly, and she thinks it would be a great initiative for the School District to embrace when it comes to adult volunteers of- fering to ride on the buses.
“I know there will probably be some liability issues that will make that difficult if not impossible, but if you volun- teer and accept that liability, there shouldn’t be a problem.
“I don’t see as many parents walking their children to bus stops anymore, or meeting them when they get off the buses. I know some of them are working parents, so that means maybe we can desig- nate someone to do that.”
In the Students Standard Of Conduct Book given to every student at the beginning of the school year, it says par- ents are to refrain from boarding school buses and/or trying to conference with the drivers at bus stops.
