Rep. Sean Shaw Wants Students To
Enter Contests
~ Three students will earn a four-year Florida College Plan Scholarship ~
TALLAHASSEE, FL – On Wednesday, January 10, 2018, Governor Rick Scott and First Lady Ann Scott invited Florida K-12 students to participate in the 2018 Black History Month Art and Essay Contests based on this year’s theme, “A Cele- bration of Innovative African-American Leaders.” Students, parents, teachers and principals are also invited to nominate full-time educa- tors in elementary, middle and high schools for the Black History Month Excellence in Education Award.
State Representative Sean Shaw is encouraging all students, especially African American students, to submit a piece of art or the essay.
“Education allows children of all backgrounds to fulfill their potential. Moreover, ac- cess to high quality education is incumbent upon families and communities to grant success for our children and the future,” he said.
“In celebration of Black History Month, I encourage participation in the 2018 Black History Month contests to earn a four-year Florida College Plan Scholarship for students or the Excellence in Education Award for a quali- fied State Educator,” he con- cluded.
Governor Scott said, “Ann and I are proud to join Florida families in celebrating Black History Month this Feb- ruary and encourage every Florida student to participate in the 2018 Black History Month contests and nominate one of our state’s great educa- tors for the Excellence in Ed- ucation Award.”

Month contests in celebration of Florida’s many innovative leaders. I hope every student takes advantage of this oppor- tunity to learn about our state’s history and potentially earn a four-year Florida Col- lege Plan Scholarship.
“We are also honored to recognize this year’s featured artist, Thomas H. Lewis, whose beautiful one-of-a-kind stained glass art is displayed around the country.”
Art Contest for Grades K-3: The Black History Month art contest is open to all Florida students in grades K-3. Two winners will be se- lected.
Essay Contest for Grades 4-12: The Black His- tory Month essay contest is open to all Florida students in grades 4 through 12. Three winners will be selected: one elementary student (grades 4- 5), one middle-school student (grades 6-8), and one high school student (grades 9-12). Winners will receive a four- year Florida College Plan scholarship provided by the Florida Prepaid College Foun- dation.
