Ava DuVernay Receives First Directors Guild Award Nomination
While the Golden Globes may not have seen her (or any black people to be real), the Directors Guild of America certainly has.
The Hollywood Reporter has, um, reported that the Di- rectors Guild of America has released a partial list of their awards nominees for 2020. Among the names released was that of writer, director, producer and general killer of the game Ava DuVernay for her work on When They See
Us.The Netflix limited series was based on the story of The Central Park Five, a group of five black children who were falsely accused and im- prisoned for a sexual assault they didn’t commit. It show- cases with often painstaking detail the injustices and racism ingrained in the American legal system.
In addition to directing all four episodes, DuVernay

co-wrote the series alongside
Julian Breece, Robin Swicord, Attica Locke and Michael Starrbury. The se- ries was released in May to critical acclaim, scoring a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. Not only that but it was the most watched show on Net- flix upon its week of release and as of June had been viewed by over 23 million Netflix accounts worldwide.
The legal drama “Just Mercy” doesn’t do anything fancy, other than making you feel something, be it right- eous anger in the face of ob- vious racial injustice or the raw emotions of a con- demned man’s last moments before execution.
Fueled by powerful per- formances from Michael B. Jordan and Screen Actors Guild Awards nominee Jamie Foxx, “Just Mercy” (**** out of four; rated PG- 13; in theaters now in New York and LA, nationwide Fri- day) is a solid courtroom drama that most fans of the genre have seen before. But great acting, an engaging real-life tale and moments of heartfelt honesty – with a fair

According to multiple peo- ple in the know, the Starz net- work and Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson are preparing to launch a lawsuit against French, for copyright in- fringement. French leaked an entire scene from the latest episode of Power.

to Starz and 50.
One person with knowledge
of the happenings at Starz told MTO News, "What French did was outrageous and illegal, we're going after him." The in-
sider continued, "It's pretty cut and dry, from a legal stand- point. He's going to have to pay millions for this."
And even if French doesn't have the millions to pay - he has a lot of new assets that the network and 50 Cent can go after.
French and 50's latest squabble started when French posted about a used 2008 Bugatti that he bought. 50 Cent, who recently bought the 2020 version of the same car for $4 million, started clowning French over his sec- ond-hand purchase.
