Reading Series At The Straz Honors August Wilson And Lorraine Hansberry
      AUGUST WILSON
BY MONIQUE STAMPS Sentinel Staff Writer
The latest offering in the BIPOC Play Reading Series at the Straz will be a tribute to two dynamic Black play- wrights, Lorraine Hans- berry, and August Wilson. On Sunday, April 24, 2022, the Straz will honor the play- wrights and the challenges they faced in their lives.
Fred Johnson, the foun- der of the Community Arts Ensemble at the Straz, says, “The significance of these two playwrights and their success is being a voice despite their experiences with racism. Both were social justice writers and told the truth about life in America.”
Playwright August Wil- son is best known for plays that showed the experiences and heritage of the Black community in the 20th cen- tury. Wilson won the Pulit- zer Prize for Drama for two of his plays, Fences and The Piano Lesson.
LORRAINE HANSBERRY
Lorraine Hansberry
was most well-known for her play, A Raisin In The Sun. She is also credited with the phrase “To be young, gifted, and Black.” The phrase was used by singer Nina Simone in her single by the same name.
A Q&A period will follow the readings, along with lively discussions on the works of both artists.
On Thursday, April 28, 2022, the Straz will present a Town Hall focusing on Au- gust Wilson. For more in- formation, go to the STRAZ Center website.
All play readings are FREE and held at 2:30 p.m. in the TECO Thea- ter. Reservations are re- quired by calling 813.229.STAR (7827) or visiting the website at www.strazcenter.org/Ev ents/Straz/Shows/Voi- ces-of-the-Commu- nity/BIPOC-Playreading- Series and clicking on the show date.
