Jameis Winston isn’t Aziyah Freeman’s favorite football player.
Still, the 14-year-old thought it was fun to spend Sunday afternoon playing dodgeball and other outdoor games with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback at the University Area Commu- nity Center.
“I think it’s very cool,” he said. I’ve never met a profes- sional football player.”
Aziyah was one of hun- dreds of boys and girls who got the chance to see Win- ston up close as part of the free “Be Your Best You” event sponsored by the Uni- versity Area Community De- velopment Corporation and Who’s Next Barbershop.
Shop owner Ray De- moulin said the event is just one of several that is sup- ported by his business in conjunction with his non- profit, Renisha Foundation.
It’s named after his daughter, who in 2009 was accidentally killed with a gun by her 14-year-old half- brother.
Through the foundation, Demoulin hosts backpack drives and mentors youth to steer them away from nega- tive influences.
Demoulin said last year he was approached by Win- ston with the idea to put on a field day for students. Ear- lier this year, the two revis- ited the idea and reached out to the community develop- ment corporation.
The goal is to “challenge (students) and build them up,” he said.
“I’ve decided to put the right tool in their hand,” De- moulin said. “And the right tool is having someone you can talk to and open up to.”
Abigail Demoulin, 9, said she enjoyed playing around with her favorite football player. But there was just one thing missing.
“We should do it again but have more girls and have boys play against the girls,” she said.
While Winston occupied the students, parents were treated to classes on nutri- tion and health.
The classes are part of the Get Moving program which is designed to help improve

health and wellness among the families the community development corporation serves, said Sarah Combs, CEO and Executive Director.
After rounds of dodge- ball, hula hooping, and egg racing, Winston signed auto- graphs and posed for pic- tures and joined contestants
on stage for a dance-off.
In his brief remarks, Winston thanked parents for bringing their children and also shared some special
words with the students. “Keep on believing you can do anything you put your mind to,” he said. “Keep on
smiling.”
