Local
Local Artist Writes, Performs Theme
Song For Tampa Bay Lightning
BY LEON B. CREWS Sentinel Staff Writer
For hip hop artist, Daddy Purp, and his producer, DJ Freaky Fred, all that’s left is their patience.
Both men had been work- ing hard at Future Funk Pro- ductions on a new release for Daddy Purp (formerly known as Gangsta Rob).
April Owens, an em- ployee at Amalie Arena, sug- gested they put together a theme song for the Tampa Bay Lightning, and allow her to submit it for considera- tion.
“It only took us a day to come up with the music and the lyrics,” said Daddy Purp.
“We’ve distributed other copies of the song, and the response has been outstand- ing. It’s been steadily gaining praise since its release.”
Daddy Purp and DJ Freaky Fred said they’ll know within the next week whether their tune has been accepted by the Lightning or- ganization.

“A lot of people have for- gotten that I had scripted a song for the Tampa Bay Buc- caneers a few years ago, and it competed heavily with the song that was chosen,” said Daddy Purp.
“I’ve been in the studio working hard with other ma- terial and now Fred and I are ready to take the world over.”
Daddy Purp has vested more than 20 years of his life into becoming a successful artist, and although there
have been distractions along the way, Daddy Purp said he’s always found a way to get back to work and con- tinue making music.
“It’s definitely true that what won’t kill you will make you stronger. I’m living evi- dence of that, because with each setback, I get more de- termined to be successful.
“This is a business that re- quires a lot of sacrifice, and if you aren’t willing to put a lot of your past behind you, you’ll never be successful.”
