These are some of the members of the 1969-1970 State Football Championship team. They are (left to right): Andre Hill, Jonas Harris, Lonnie Houston, Herman James, Henry Cummings, and Lionel Ballard.
The State of Florida didn’t start a High School Football State Championship series until 1963.
It took five years for Hills- borough County to get its first state champion, with the Je- suit Tigers claiming the title in 1968.
A year later, the Howard W. Blake Yellow Jackets be- came the second team from Hillsborough County to win a state football championship.
The 1970 Blake Senior football team members of the 1969-1970 State Class 1A Champions celebrated their 45th class reunion last Satur- day, September 26, 2015.
The Blake Yellow Jackets defeated the Leesburg High School Yellow Jackets, with their explosive offense, 27-6 in a thriller at the old Tampa Stadium.
The beauty of the game was the collaborative effort of two former college teammates and rival coaches of Blake and Middleton, Abraham “Abe” Brown and James “Big

It was more than 30 years before another Hillsborough County High School won a state championship (Arm- wood).
On a sad note, Blake and Middleton High Schools were shut down after the 1970-1971 school year and converted into junior high schools. As a result, the championship tro- phy and all of the game film and memorabilia was lost. No

Last weekend, the rivalry between the two schools was renewed with their annual Heritage Classic game.
This year, the Yellow Jack- ets prevailed 21-3 over the Tigers, giving the North Boulevard campus.
