‘Save Our Sons And Daughters’ Action Plan
BY LEON B. CREWS Sentinel Staff Writer
On Thursday, May 7th, the first in a series of rallies was held to appeal to everyone to help “Stop the Violence, Save Our Sons and Daughters.”
The East Tampa Business and Civic Association, Stop The Violence 813, Ebone Cruz of the Tom Joyner Morning Show (WTMP 1150AM Radio), Hat- Attitude, NAN (National Action Network), The Dream Center, the City of Tampa’s YET Center, Tampa Housing Authority, Chamberlain High school, Tampa Police Department, The Dream Defenders, Cons Help- ing Cons and many others have joined to make sure people con- tinue to understand what it takes to help the children help themselves and “STOP THE GUN VIOLENCE.”
On Saturday, May 9th, there will be a walk from the TPD Dis- trict III office. Lineup will begin at 10:30 a.m. and the talk will begin at 11 a. m., ending at the Jackson Heights NFL Yet Center on 34th Street and Lake Avenue.
“We are asking all families that have lost someone to vio- lence or simply want to show their respect for the many young people killed to come out and join the walk,” said Dianne Hart, CEO of the ETBCA.
Everyone is encouraged to wear shirts or carry banners and pictures of their loved ones.
The walk will be followed by
DIANNE HART CEO ETBCA
a Unity Festival and free concert in the park.
“There are a lot of people saying walks and rallies are not helping,” said Hart.
“I do not know what the so- lution is, but this will help to keep these senseless deaths in the forefront of the community.”
Hart said it’s critical we show unity, because Black lives do matter.
“That’s not a slogan we just use to let law enforcement per- sonnel feel about their actions, but for us as well. We can’t just bury what’s happening.
“We’ve got to start cleaning up our own community, so the excuses need to stop. We all just need to step up.”
Hart said this the time for persistence, and she encourages everyone to march or do what- ever it takes to put the word out.
“We are demanding job fairs or those people facing chal-
lenges in their live. It’s time for allofustohaveasenseofur- gency.”
Ebone Cruz said the rally will give young people a chance to sit down with community leaders and others, and let us know what’s going on.
“We’re trying to use the common ground of music to bring them together. We need to know what they are thinking, and I’m honored to be in a posi- tion to open the event.
“I’ll present a close friend of mind, along with the people form Hat-Attitude. We want the young people to keep coming, although it’s under rough cir- cumstances.”
Cruz said it’s also important that older adults lead by exam- ple, because these young people aren’t being heard or are just fol- lowing in the footsteps of what they’ve been exposed to their en- tire lives.
