     Where I’m From
BY ZIAH WILLIAMS
I’m from Hurricane Isabel, Kent General Hospital 8:03 in the morning, September 17, 2003.
I’m from trips to mommom’s for my favorite pie and fried chicken.
I’m from mud pies in mom- mom’s front yard with my cousin, family bonfires, and lots of cookouts.
I’m from Mary Mary to Byron Cage, this was just the start of my love for music.
I’m from rap with my older brother, this is what I really liked.
I’m from trips to Florida to see more family, such a long car ride but so much fun.
I’m from seeing Nana once a year because she lived so far.
I’m from camp in the summer from the age of five. Hershey Park each year and never wanting the trip to end.
I’m from teacups to roller coasters and still loving both.
I’m from half a junior and none of the senior, oh how I wish it could be normal again. No Senior Sunrise, no homecoming, no senior skip day, no prom and a weird graduation. I hope it’s not so.
I’m from still making the best out of the world we live in today. Police brutality, racism, and a president who doesn’t seem to notice. I thought we left this in the sixties.
I’m from history in the making: my children and grandchil- dren will learn about it.
I’m from the first Black woman Vice President. My VP looks like me. Such an inspiration for young Black girls.
I’m from a world where I am targeted because of the color of my skin.
This right here is my biggest fear.
(Ziah is the daughter of former Tampan, King High graduate, Air Fore retiree, Zachery Williams, who now makes his home in Delaware. She’s also the niece of Tampan Veronica Williams Parker.)
