Congressmen Stress Importance Of Election During Sentinel Visit
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
This week, two U. S. Con- gressmen visited Tampa and the Sentinel. Their reason for being here was to encourage African Americans to vote.
On Tuesday, accompanied by State Senator Arthenia Joyner, U. S. Congressman Emanuel Cleaver, II, said he has known Secretary Hillary Clinton for several years. And, “there has never been a more capable candidate and that’s a
fact.”Congressman Cleaver said he has known Secretary Clinton for several years. He was at her residence when she decided to withdraw from the presidential race in 2008.
Congressman Cleaver said when Secretary (Hillary) Clinton learned about the Black Caucus’ effort to push the 10/20/30 plan, she fully em- braced the idea.
A member of the HUD Fi- nancial Services Committee, Congressman Cleaver said another concern is the manner in which an individual must apply for a federal job.
“There has been a technology shift. You can’t apply for a fed- eral job except on line. People

must be computer literate and that puts us at a disadvantage. Hillary Clinton is committed to providing training so that people can apply for these jobs. If you don’t retool Black work- ers, we are going to fall behind.
“It is very important that we go to the polls and vote. We have a chance to pick a presi- dent. Our grandparents picked cotton, but we have a chance to pick a president,” Congress- man Cleaver said.
On Wednesday, U. S. Con- gressman Keith Ellison, ac- companied by State Representative Ed Narain, visited the Sentinel.
“This is a historic election

like none ever before and the stakes couldn’t be higher,” Congressman Ellison said.
He further said that Donald Trump has inspired a group of racist people and he is putting white racist in place.
“Trump is mainstreaming hate and we can’t afford to just sit around. We want to make sure the President stands for what you believe in. We still must think about human soli- darity. We must work for racial solidarity.
“We must vote early and vote every day until November 8th.” Both congressmen appear on
MSNBC as political analysts.
