History Group Hosts Kentucky Derby Day In The Heights
On May 4, 2019, a unique Kentucky Derby Day party was held in Tampa Heights. The inaugural event was hosted by History With A Twist, a travel- ing museum focused on African-American History and Culture.
Each year on the first Sat- urday in May, thousands of people gather at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, for the Kentucky Derby races. It’s a party and a fashion show: ladies in fancy hats and men in seersucker suits and bowties.
History With A Twist repli- cated that experience in Tampa. The twist to the event was that those in attendance were enlightened about the contributions that African American jockeys and trainers made to the Derby races.
History with a Twist, founded by Sophia Cherry, a Black History enthusiast, goes beyond the standard Black History curriculum usually taught in school. It will intro- duce you to some of the lesser known facts related to the African American experience and culture. It is a traveling ex-
hibit which brings Black His- tory to you wherever it’s needed or requested, including churches, schools, private events, barbershops, beauty salons, corporate events, etc.
