On Monday morning, an 11-year-old girl was surprised at her school. She was hon- ored for making a dramatic call during a burglary at her home. The surprise visit took place at Coleman Middle School, where Annabelle Sanders is a student.
Tampa Police Chief Eric Ward and Nicolas Ware, the dispatcher who answered her call for help stopped by to meet her and her mother, Ms. Jill Sanders.
Chief Ward presented her with an award. During the meeting, Dispatcher Ware said, “She just smiled
and said thank you. She’s kind of shy.”
But, on the evening of Au- gust 28th, Annabelle’s quick thinking played a key role in her safety, the safety of her 7- year-old brother, and the ar- rest of a burglary suspect.
The children were at their residence watching television when Annabelle heard the sound of breaking glass. Her brother didn’t hear it ini- tially, but did hear when the sound was repeated.
Annabelle took her brother and went into her mother’s bathroom and bar- ricaded the door. She then called 9-1-1 and spoke with Dispatcher Ware.
“We always ask if the
caller is in a secured location. After that I dispatched a car to her address and continued talking to her. She told me she could hear the suspect walking in her mother’s room.
“I told her to remain quiet until he walked away. She was able to answer my ques- tions and was able to tell me where the man was in the house. Because of her, the of- ficers were able to set up and caught him just as he was running from the house. She is a brave little girl,” Dis- patcher Ware said.
He said the suspect actu- ally tried to open the door where the children were hid- den about three times.

The left rear of the Neon struck the right front of the semi, causing the Neon to ro- tate counter clockwise and into the n0rthbound lanes. It struck the 2008 Dodge Charger,
driven by Corey Sutton, 36, of Mulberry, who was driving northbound.
Emergency Medical Serv- ices responded to the scene and determined that Watson did not have a pulse. He was trans- ported to Lakeland Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
