Frank Reddick knew that he would seek a second term as a member of City Council. So, he began prepar- ing for the task at hand by gathering his campaign work- ers, having tee-shirts printed, and having signs made to an- nounce his candidacy.
“I didn’t find out that I would be unopposed until 12 o’clock on January 16th, the deadline to qualify. So, I pre- pared to run for the election,” Councilman Reddick said.
Those wishing to run for the City Council District 5 Seat had the option of Quali- fying by Petition, which means collecting signatures, or by paying a cash qualifying fee. Councilman Reddick said he qualified by signature.
Now that he is unopposed for the seat, Councilman Reddick reviewed his suc- cesses and failures during his first term.
The only failure he listed was being unable to obtain additional funding in the budget to establish an out- door restroom facility at Ragan Park, 1200 E. Lake Av-

enue. But, that is not to say he has abandoned the idea. “I’m going to push hard during the next budget cycle to get the bathrooms at that location,” he said.
Among his accomplish- ments, he listed:
1). The re-opening of the Williams Park Pool. The pool had been closed for several years, but is open and doing well.
2). Getting the ball rolling on establishing a new traffic signal and crosswalk on E. Hillsborough Avenue near Meridan Point Apartment Complex after two students were killed attempting to cross the street.
3). Hosting a Black On
Black Crime Forum with local leaders to address the num- ber of deaths associated with Black On Black Crime.
4). The opening of a Wal- Mart Super Center on E. Hillsborough Avenue.
“The Wal-Mart is near completion and is on target. It is scheduled to open in April or May. There will be a total of about 300 full and part time jobs when the store opens and about 225 of those jobs will go to people in the East Tampa Community if they apply. They can go on- line and apply now,” Coun- cilman Reddick said.
After realizing that he would not have an opponent, Councilman Reddick said he gave some of the campaign signs away and that’s why they are visible in the com- munity. “There were just too many to throw away,” he said.
Unlike other elected boards where the terms are staggered, every four years, an election takes place to choose all seven members of City Council. The only other candidate who is unopposed on the City Council is Lisa Montelione, District 7 Rep- resentative.
