The Sentinel Editorial Board Recommendations
Malcolm X said, “early in mylife,Ihadlearnedthatifyou want something, you had better make some noise.”
The Sentinel Editorial Board understands that most people feel they don’t need to go and
Mainly, because District 5 City Councilman Frank Reddick does not have an opponent, and Mayor Buckhorn has a write-
in candidate.
However, City Councilman
Reddick is only 1 vote on a 7 member board.
That means, At-Large Dis- tricts 1, 2, 3 and Single Member Districts 4 and 6 are up for elec- tion.
In District 1, City Councilman Mike Suarez is being challenged by Susan Long. Ms. Long is a college professor who has, ac- cording to her, taken the bull by the horns in her Seminole Heights neighborhood to help bring about the Renaissance changes happening there now. A straight shooter, Ms. Long had a lot to say, and was quite can- did. However, she made a few statements that gave the Board PAUSE.
Her opponent, Councilman Suarez, took a minute to get in the groove on the Council, but typically supports Reddick on actions pertaining to our com- munity.
DISTRICT 1... MIKE SUAREZ
In District 2, City Councilman Charlie Miranda, formerly of District 6, decided he wants to milk the term issue for every- thing he can. Miranda, 72, has never come to meet with the Sentinel Editorial Board as a Councilman, so we are not sure where he stands now on issues. We do however remember he voted against the residents in Carver City/Lincoln Gardens on the issue of the Cigar City Brew- ing Company, and we have viewed him sideways ever since. His opponents are Joseph Citro and Julie Jenkins.
Mr. Citro could not work his schedule to fit meeting with our Board, so he was automatically eliminated from our process. That leaves Julie Jenkins.
Mrs. Jenkins is a director at St. Peter Claver, and has helped keep the school open through her sales experience. Jenkins is also being supported by former Councilwoman Gwen Miller. The Board decided to support Jenkins with the hope that she will team with Reddick to bring positive changes to his District. DISTRICT 2...
JULIE JENKINS
In District 3, the contest pits incumbent Yvonne ‘Yolie’ Capin
against Paul Erni. Capin has been up and down throughout her first 4 years on Council. She has been on the left side of is- sues that concern our commu- nity, but has seemingly toned down over the last year or so. Erni was so quirky, the Board had a hard time trying to figure out where he was with things.
This seat is very important, and we feel that Councilwoman Capin will win hands down, however, Erni has a spirited en- ergy that perhaps next time around will work for him. DISTRICT 3
YVONNE ‘YOLIE’ CAPIN
In District 4, incumbent Harry Cohen is being challenged by Kent King. Mr. King stated he decided to run because he was having an issue with the city, and Councilman Cohen did not help him. We did not get any real substance from Mr. King, he seemed flustered at times. Councilman Cohen on the other hand has supported some key is- sues we felt strongly about, so it merited our support. DISTRICT 4
HARRY COHEN
The District 6 race is going to be very interesting. The Board met with all 3 candidates and felt that although they all bring different energy, they all had a good message.
Jackie Toledo was so ener- gized we had to slow her down. She is an engineer, a mom and businesswoman, all great attrib- utes.
Guido Maniscalco has family history running deeply in his campaign conversation. Manis- calco was low-key and know- ledgeable, but needs a little more time to dig a little deeper.
Thomas Castellano is an old guard Tampa native. Born in Tampa, raised in Tampa and has a business in West Tampa. The Board decided to support Castellano mainly because he has been around long enough to see the changes good and bad in an area that will need a person who will push back when neces- sary.
