SARAH DAVIS .....retired teacher stabbed to death in her home.
Last week, a jury recom- mended Byron Burch, 44, spend the rest of his life in prison for the fatal stabbing of an 80-year-old retired teacher and former employee of the Hernando County Sheriff’s Of- fice.
In June, a jury said Burch was guilty of first-degree mur- der in the May 2010 death of Sarah Davis. A hearing is scheduled for August 20th and a judge will decide whether Burch will be sentenced to life in prison or received the death sentence.
Investigators said Davis felt sorry for Burch after learning he was destitute and addicted to drugs. She tried to help him by giving him jobs around her home.
Detectives said Burch at- tacked Davis with a knife when she tried to stop him from stealing her jewelry. Her body was found in a bathroom in a pool of blood with more than 20 stab wounds.
Records revealed Burch’s criminal history dating back to when he was 16. He has been convicted of sexual battery, burglary, battery against a law enforcement officer and resist- ing arrest.
Burch had been released from prison six months before the Davis murder after an ap- pellate court over turned a rob- bery conviction after he served less than a fifth of a 15-year sentence.
