Last Friday morning shortly after 7:30 a.m.,, a stu- dent opened fire at his high school in Santa Fe, Texas.
In its aftermath 2 substi- tute teachers and 8 students were killed and 10 others were injured.
In the wake of this shoot- ing, Hillsborough County law enforcement have increased security at local schools.
CHIEF BRIAN DUGAN
Law enforcement and school superintendents throughout the state are cur- rently making plans to imple- ment a new law requiring all schools to have armed security on their respective campuses.
Hillsborough County
Sheriff Chad Chronister
said in a statement, “Our na- tion finds itself in the throes of another unthinkable tragedy at a school. The sum- mer break was on the horizon, but now lives have been lost

and countless others changed forever.
“Beginning Monday, May 21, there will be an enhanced law enforcement presence at every school in unincorporated Hillsborough County. Our school resource deputy pro- gram currently covers all mid- dle schools and high schools, and half of the 80 elementary schools in our jurisdiction.
“Now every elementary school will be part of our secu- rity protocol. This enhanced safety plan will be in effect until the end of the school year on Friday, May 25.
“I, along with Hillsborough Public School District Superin- tendent Jeff Eakins, believe this plan will provide some peace of mind for par- ents and caregivers, and teach- ers and staff.
“We must always be ready to react and adapt when some- thing horrific confronts us without notice.
“This community can and should be confident that your Sheriff’s Office is doing what it takes to prevent any tragedy in our schools. You have our solemn vow that we will not let you down.’’
Tampa Police Chief Brian Dugan said, “In the wake of Friday’s school shoot- ing in Santa Fe, Texas, Tampa Police will have a greater pres- ence in and around local schools next week - the final week of the school year.”
On Friday, Tampa Police, the Hillsborough County Sher- iff’s Office, and Hillsborough County Public Schools held discussions about what could be done to beef up security for the final days of the school year.
“We’re all on the same page. While there are no threats to our schools, we’ve all agreed we’re going to take a proactive approach. Students and teachers should be able to go to school and feel safe, and parents should feel comfortable sending their chil- dren to school,” Chief Dugan said.
Group Seeks To Draw Attention To ‘National Obama Day’
  PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
James Ford is a member of an organization on a mis- sion. Their goal is to draw na- tional attention to President Barack Obama’s birthday.
“This is a progressive movement and we want to unite everyone in the country. His legacy should be passed down by us because no one else will tell our kids about a Black man who was the most powerful person in the coun- try for 8 years,” Ford said.
Ford, a resident of De- troit, Michigan said on August 4th, he wants people around the country to celebrate. “If anyone can think of a better role model, then I would like to see them. If we don’t cele- brate his legacy, we may never see another minority presi- dent in our lifetimes. By cele-
brating his legacy, a lot of kids will be inspired to follow his example.
“We need to celebrate while he is alive. Give them someone who is living as an example. Kids need motiva- tion. This is not a political day. It’s a day of motivation. Cities all over the country are preparing for this day. We hope it will spread to others,” Ford said.
On August 4, 2018, Pres- ident Barack Obama will celebrate his 57th birthday.
A native of Honolulu, Hawaii, he became the first African American to be elected president of the United States in 2008.
He won a second term in 2012.
